… of departure is a first approach toward understanding the self-taught anthropologist Daisy Bates via a dual portrait of Dutch performer Rickie Edens. Edens listens to her own voice, reading excerpts from Julia Blackburn's "Daisy Bates in the Desert".
Born in Dublin in 1860, Bates died in 1952 in South Australia. For 30 years she lived alone in a tent in the desert studying the language and rituals of Aborigine tribes. A woman who always wore a corset and white gloves. We may not know who she really was, because Daisy Bates always told her life in different variants. Was she a notorious liar, or did she reconstruct what she experienced?
